Children’s books

My brother BernadetteWe have just added some children’s books to our bookshop, most suggested by Changing Attitude supporter, Bar Nash Williams.  She says:

‘The range of material available for young children is more univocal, in that the urge not to hurt or discriminate against minorities has led to a burgeoning of positive stories about alternative family structures and alternative expressions of femininity and masculinity.

It is interesting to ask why children’s publishers would not dare to produce something that could be construed as ‘anti-gay’, while material for adults is still likely to include statements that are discriminatory.’

The first six books we’ve added include picture books for young children: King and King is about a handsome prince seeking a partner; And Tango makes three is about two male penguins in New York Zoo raising a chick.

For tweenies Totally Joe, Hero and the God Box look at the experience of coming out – whether or not you happen to be a superhero.  And My Brother Bernadette explores gender roles and overcoming bullying.

Not a lot for teenage girls yet – what else should we add?
